A village in Kitashitara County, in the northeastern tip of Aichi Prefecture. Population 198 (1995). Located on the west bank of the midstream of the Tenryu River, it is the smallest village in the prefecture, bordering Nagano Prefecture to the north and Shizuoka Prefecture to the east. Most of the village area is covered by forests, and it has produced high-quality timber since ancient times, making forestry its main industry. Tea and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated, but the population has been declining since peaking at 1,496 in 1920. The population has dropped dramatically, especially due to four mass migrations to the Atsumi Peninsula from 1935 onwards, and the departure of villagers to Toyohashi City, Takashibara and Tenpakubara following the construction of the Sakuma Dam in 1960.
