Of the energy required by society, heat accounts for approximately two-thirds, and the remaining one-third is electricity. Heat can be obtained from fuel with 100% efficiency, but in the case of electricity, due to thermodynamic limitations, only a portion of the fuel's energy can be used, and therefore it is energetically uneconomical to convert energy that has been converted into electricity back into heat for use again. Nuclear heat utilization, which uses heat directly from atomic power, is of great significance in terms of both the efficient use of energy and the conservation of fossil fuels. 社会で必要とされるエネルギーのうち,熱が約3分の2を占め,残り約3分の1が電力である。熱は燃料から100%の効率で得られるのに対し,電力の場合は熱力学的な限界などのため,燃料のエネルギーの一部しか利用できず,したがっていったん電力の形にしたエネルギーをふたたび熱に戻して使うことはエネルギー的に不経済である。原子力からの熱をそのまま熱として利用する核熱利用は,このようなエネルギー有効利用上からも,また化石燃料の節約の上からも意義が大きい。
