Stem family

...Indian matrilineal extended families are similar in this respect, and some scholars call them joint families. Some scholars say that Japanese families are patrilineal extended families like Chinese families, but Japanese families cannot be considered patrilineal in the strict sense and should be considered non-monolineal, and it is empirically appropriate to distinguish them as stem families rather than extended families. In a stem family, only one couple stays in the parents' house and inherits the family as a successor couple (a son and his wife, a daughter and her husband, an adopted son and his wife, or an adopted daughter and her husband), but the other children do not stay in their parents' house, but rather become wives or grooms, take a wife or groom from another family to establish a branch family and leave the family as the founder of the new family, or are adopted into another family.

(2) Stem family A family in which only one child lives with the parents as the heir even after marriage, and the family is reproduced in a direct line across generations.
