Philippine national hero who killed Magellan on Mactan Island during his circumnavigation of the globe. Date of birth and death unknown. Magellan and his crew reached the Philippine archipelago in March 1521, and landed on Cebu Island on April 7, where they made a blood pact of friendship with the island's most powerful chief, Rajah Humabon. They then demanded that the chiefs of the neighboring islands recognize Rajah Humabon as their king, but Lapu-Lapu, the chief of Mactan, a small island bordering Cebu on the east, refused, and also refused friendship with Spain. At that time, another chief of Mactan, Datu Sula, asked Magellan for help in a dispute with Lapu-Lapu, so on April 27, Magellan went to attack Lapu-Lapu, but was brutally murdered by Lapu-Lapu's men.
