A monthly magazine including natural sciences, first published by Toyo Gakugeisha in October 1881. It was Japan's first general academic magazine. It was edited by Sugiura Jugo and Chikami Kiyoomi, with the help of Inoue Tetsujiro and Isono Tokusaburo, and was modelled on the British scientific magazine Nature, with the aim of enlightening readers. In the early days, it gained a large readership by publishing literary works, but it also made heavy use of scholars from government academia, including Kato Hiroyuki and Kikuchi Dairoku, and from the mid-1990s it strengthened its character as a magazine for enlightening science readers.
