A character code system. Established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 1963. Alphabet, numbers, symbols, etc. are expressed with 7 bits of information (maximum 128 characters). Computers process 8 bits and can handle 256 characters, but the remaining 128 characters contain different characters and symbols depending on the manufacturer and country. ◇From "American Standard Code for Information Interchange".
