Maupeou, René-Nicolas-Charles-Augustin de
Born: February 25, 1714, Paris
[Died] July 29, 1792. Tuys. French politician during the reign of Louis XV. Born into a wealthy family of robed nobles, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Paris Parlement in 1768. Together with J. Théré, the Inspector General of Finances, and the Duke of Aiguillon, he formed the "Triumvirate" and embarked on financial reforms, including taxation of the privileged classes. In 1771, he expelled 130 opposing Parlementary assessors, stripped the Parlementary of its privileges, including the right to register royal decrees, and reduced it, and attempted to establish a modern bureaucratic government. However, when Louis XVI ascended to the throne in 1774, the Parlementary faction made a comeback, restored its privileges, and Maupou retired.
