...The prefectural capital of Fukuoka Prefecture in the northwest. It is the political, economic and cultural center of Kyushu. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. In 1972, it became a city designated by government ordinance and established five wards: Central, Hakata, Higashi, Nishi and Minami. In 1982, Nishi ward was divided into three wards: Jonan, Sawara and Nishi, and a seven-ward system was implemented. The population is 1,284,795 (1995). The city area occupies most of the Fukuoka plain and includes the three islands of Orojima, Genkaijima and Nokonoshima. The southern end of the city borders Saga Prefecture through the Sefuri mountain range. Hakata, which was once called Natsu in the past, is a natural harbor close to the Korean peninsula and China, and a key continental transportation point facing Hakata Bay. It was the outer port of Dazaifu, the port of arrival and departure for Japanese envoys to the Sui and Tang dynasties, and a trading port, and was a gateway for the import of continental culture for a long time.
