Japanese: 預作 - あずかりさく

〘 noun 〙 A type of tenant farming. In the manor system from the end of ancient times to the Middle Ages, it meant taking custody of land from a feudal lord, cultivating it or managing it in exchange for paying rent. *Hundred Volumes of Todaiji Documents - 45, May 6, 940, Tenkei _3rd Year, Draft Notice from Kanzeonji Temple in Chikuzen Province "Now, _{in accordance with} the _request of the _donor , the temple's _land , the land under _its control, the _{land of} _{the border} , _and if requested, the land may _{be entrusted} to _{the owner} ." [Additional note] It is thought that later it came to mean tenant farming in general, with the term "azukaru" meaning to tenant farm and " azukari byakusho" meaning to entrust the land to a tenant farmer.

〘名〙小作の一種。古代末期から中世の荘園制において、領主から土地を預かり、地代などを納めて耕作し、または経営すること。※百巻本東大寺文書‐四五・天慶三年（940）五月六日・筑前国観世音寺牒案「今為_レ満_二施主之願_一、寺家領_二掌件田_一、尋_二有縁田刀_一、仰_下可_二預作_一之由_上」[補注]後には、一般の小作をいうようになったと思われ、小作することを「あずかる」、小作農を「預百姓(あずかりびゃくしょう)」という。
