〘 noun 〙 A type of tenant farming. In the manor system from the end of ancient times to the Middle Ages, it meant taking custody of land from a feudal lord, cultivating it or managing it in exchange for paying rent. *Hundred Volumes of Todaiji Documents - 45, May 6, 940, Tenkei 3rd Year, Draft Notice from Kanzeonji Temple in Chikuzen Province "Now, in accordance with the request of the donor , the temple's land , the land under its control, the land of the border , and if requested, the land may be entrusted to the owner ." [Additional note] It is thought that later it came to mean tenant farming in general, with the term "azukaru" meaning to tenant farm and " azukari byakusho" meaning to entrust the land to a tenant farmer.
