A mammal of the family Vespertilionidae in the order Chiroptera. This insectivorous bat is named after the remarkably long second phalange of the third digit (middle digit) of its forelimb. It is widely distributed in southern Europe, Asia, and Australia, and in Japan it is found on Honshu (except Hokkaido, the Izu Seven Islands), Shikoku, Kyushu, and their associated islands. Its forearm length is 47-48 mm, and its head and body length 60-67 mm. Its head is small, and its ears are short. Its wings are thin and narrow. When folding its wings, it bends the second phalange of the third digit forward. It has strong flying power, and flies at high altitudes at high speeds like a swift.
