A city in the Masovian Voivodeship in central Poland. Located about 90 km west-northwest of Warsaw, it developed on a terrace on the right bank of the Vistula River. Population 130,830 (2000). A market town that developed relatively early in the Kujawy Plain, a corner of the Greater Wielkopolska region, its existence became known in the 10th century and developed into a city in 1237. Between the 12th and 14th centuries it became a leading industrial city known for its goldwork and joinery, and the cathedral and many other historical buildings that show its former prosperity remain. After World War II, with the establishment of an oil refinery and petrochemical complex (1962), it rapidly grew into an oil industrial city.
