Khafgi Oil Field

An offshore oil field in the Persian Gulf, located off the coast of the former neutral zone between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. It is located north of the Khafji Safaniya oil field, the fourth largest oil field in the world, and is developed and produced by Japan's Arabian Oil Company. Permission was granted in 1957 by the Saudi Arabian government, and the Kuwaiti government the following year, and development was successful in 1960. A total of 420.93 million kiloliters of crude oil had been exported to Japan by the end of fiscal 1998. However, Arabian Oil failed in negotiations with Saudi Arabia to renew its oil concession, which was due to expire in February 2000, and on February 28 of the same year, Saudi Arabia's mining rights to the independently developed oil field expired. As a result, half of the rights to the Khafji oil field, which has a daily production of about 300,000 barrels, were seized by Saudi Arabia. Kuwait's mining rights also expired in 2003. However, a crude oil purchase contract was concluded with Kuwait until 2023.

クウェート、サウジアラビアと旧中立地帯の沖合いにある、ペルシア湾の海底油田。世界第4位の大油田であるカフジ・サファニア油田の北側をいい、日本のアラビア石油が開発、生産している。1957年にサウジアラビア政府より、翌年クウェート政府より許可が与えられ、60年に開発が成功した。98年度末までの累計で4億2093万キロリットルの原油が日本へ輸出された。しかし、アラビア石油は2000年2月を期限とするサウジアラビア側との石油利権更新交渉に失敗、同年2月28日、サウジアラビアに対する自主開発油田の採掘権が失効した。この結果、日量約30万バレルのカフジ油田の権益の半分がサウジアラビアに接収されることになった。また、03年にはクウェート側の採掘権も失効。ただし、クウェートとは2023年までの原油売買契約が結ばれている。
