[Born] Kaō 2 (1170) [Died] March 11, 1221 (Jōkyū 3). A nobleman and poet in the early Kamakura period in Kyoto. Son of Naniwa Yoritsune. Fujiwara surname. Founder of the Asukai family. His wife was the daughter of Oe Hiromoto. One of the compilers of the Shin Kokin Wakashu. Served under three successive emperors, Gotoba, Tsuchimikado, and Juntoku, and also served the Kamakura shogunate. He attained the rank of councilor and Junior Third Rank. He learned waka from Fujiwara no Shunzei, and was a member of the Wakadokoro office. He participated in the Sengohyakuban Utaawase (Poetry Contest). 22 of his poems are included in the Shin Kokinshu. His style of poetry is elegant and Shin Kokin-fu, and he has a family anthology, Asukai-shu (1292, compiled by his grandson Masaari). He was skilled in kemari (football) along with his brother Munenaga (founder of the Naniwa school), and is the founder of the Asukai school. Their descendants served in Kyoto and Kamakura, mastering both waka poetry and the family art of kemari.
