John of Gaunt

The fourth son of King Edward III of England, Duke of Lancaster. His name was derived from Ghent in Flanders, where he was born. At the age of two, he married Branshev, the niece of Henry, Earl of Richmond and 1st Duke of Lancaster. In 62, he became Duke of Lancaster and was granted a vast duchy. The future King Henry IV was born to them. John fought in the Hundred Years' War with his brother Edward, the Black Prince, in France and Spain. After Branshev's death, he married Constance, daughter of the King of Castile, and thereafter claimed to be King of Castile.

イングランド王エドワード3世の第4子でランカスター公。ゴーントの名は生地フランドルのヘントGentにちなむ。2歳でリッチモンド伯，初代ランカスター公ヘンリーの姪ブラーンシュと結婚し，62年ランカスター公となって広大な公領を得た。二人の間に後の国王ヘンリー4世が生まれた。ジョンは百年戦争で兄エドワード黒太子とともにフランス，スペインで戦った。ブラーンシュの没後カスティリャ王の娘コンスタンスと結婚し以後カスティリャ王を僭称した。
