1340‐99 The fourth son of King Edward III of England, Duke of Lancaster. His name was derived from Ghent in Flanders, where he was born. At the age of two, he married Branshev, the niece of Henry, Earl of Richmond and 1st Duke of Lancaster. In 62, he became Duke of Lancaster and was granted a vast duchy. The future King Henry IV was born to them. John fought in the Hundred Years' War with his brother Edward, the Black Prince, in France and Spain.
