Abbreviated as TMV. It is the causative agent of tobacco mosaic disease and was isolated in crystalline form by WM Stanley in 1935. The particle size is a rod-shaped particle 15-18 nm in diameter, 300 nm in length, and has a molecular weight of 4 x 107. The chemical composition of TMV particles is 95% protein and 5% RNA. In other words, about 2130 identical protein molecules are connected in a spiral shape around an RNA with a chain of about 6000 nucleotides. This protein has a molecular weight of 1.7 x 104 , 158 amino acid groups, a predetermined sequence, and an acetylated N-terminus. TMV-RNA is a single-stranded RNA that contains genetic information like DNA and is infectious in itself.
