...There are many holy places, but the four most important are Dvaraka in the north, Varanasi in the west, Jagannath in the east, and Rameswara in the south. India has an almost innumerable number of temples, some of which are still being built, as well as monasteries (mata) and ashrams (training halls). Among the most important rites are the approximately forty samskaras, or rites of passage, which must be performed throughout an individual's life, especially birth ceremonies, initiations at which boys formally become members of Hindu society, weddings, and funerals.
