〘名〙① 令制で、番をつくり当番の日に官司に出勤すること。また、その官職。毎日出勤する長上(ちょうじょう)に対する語で、規定では年間一四〇日以上出勤しなければならないとされている。舎人・史生・伴部・使部・散位などの下級官職がこれにあたる。分番(ぶばん)。番上官。※続日本紀‐和銅四年（711）一〇月甲子「番上大舎人〈略〉、絲二絇、銭十文」② 順番に交替で勤務すること。※随筆・折たく柴の記（1716頃）下「大坂番上交替の比にさきだちて」
