Student song - gakusei ka

Japanese:
Student song - gakusei ka
A type of folk song, as opposed to art song. It was sung by traditional German male students, either for formal or informal purposes, at social gatherings. Many of the songs have themes closely related to student status, such as alcohol, love, friendship, alma mater, homeland, and freedom, but they also have strong ties to general folk songs, as seen in the inclusion of "Wild Rose" and "Lorelei" in the Lahr edition of "Comprehensive Student Songs," which has been published more than 160 times since 1858. Collections of student songs from the Middle Ages, such as "Carmina Burana," began to be published at the end of the 18th century, and in the first half of the 19th century, many student song collections were compiled, collecting both old and new songs, in conjunction with the movement to form liberal or patriotic Burschenschafts (student organizations) that grew during the Napoleonic Wars.
