The national airline of France, based in Paris (98.6% owned by the government). Its airline code is AF. It mainly operates international routes, and its route network covers the whole world, with short and medium-distance routes connecting major cities in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and long-distance routes connecting major cities in North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Madagascar, the Indian Ocean Islands, and Southeast Asia. It was the first capitalist country to open routes to China. It has been serving Japan since 1952. It was established in 1933 through a merger of Air Union and several other airlines, but became nationalized when the Nationalization Act was enacted in 1948.
