Born: March 30, 1920, Tokyo [Died] October 28, 1981. Tokyo. Actor and director. The eldest son of Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and the composer Yasushi was his younger brother. Graduated from the Department of French Literature at Keio University. In 1948, he joined the Bungakuza Theatre Company from the Mugi no Kai group he formed with Michio Kato, and with his good looks and intelligence, he achieved success with the lead role in Hamlet (1956). In 1963, he left Bungakuza with Kyoko Kishida and others, and formed the Gekidan Kumo Theatre Company under the guidance of Tsuneari Fukuda. He also had an interest in directing, and directed Nayotake (1955) and Takeaki Enomoto (1968). In 1975, he left Kumo again with Kishida and others to found the Engeki Shudan En, but his last production was a re-direction of Izumi Kyoka's Yasha-ga-ike in 1979.
