Hunan School (English: Hunan School)

Hunan School (English: Hunan School)
A branch of Taoism that arose in the Song Dynasty in China. It was so named because it flourished mainly in Hengshan in Hunan Province. It made a clear distinction between the principles of heaven and human desires, righteousness and profit, and China and barbarians, advocated the anti-Buddhism movement, and made strict ethical criticisms of history. Regarding Shingaku, Hu Wufeng (Hong) advocated the theory of discerning and understanding tan'ni. This was a dynamic method of training that suggested that the principles of heaven in the heart appear the moment the heart is moved and is then identified and expanded. This was passed on to his disciple Zhang Shu (Nanxuan) and had a major influence on Zhu Xi during the formative years of his thought.
