The Bunroku-Keicho War

Japanese: 文禄･慶長の役 - ぶんろくけいちょうのえき

The wars of aggression against Korea that Toyotomi Hideyoshi planned twice between 1592 and 1598 (Bunroku 1 and Keicho 3). In Korea, they are called the "Imjin-Jeongyu War" or "Imjin War."

[Hideyoshi's motives and preparations]
Originally, Hideyoshi's intention was to subjugate the Ming Dynasty (entering the Tang Dynasty), and he advocated a "temporary route to enter Ming" by asking Korea to guide him there. Hideyoshi's public announcement of his intention to send troops can be confirmed in September 1585 (Tensho 13), immediately after his appointment as regent, but after that, he ordered Mune Yoshitoshi of Tsushima to conduct diplomatic negotiations and request the visit of the Korean king to Japan.

［秀吉の動機と準備過程］
　本来，秀吉の意図は明国を服属させること(唐（から）入り)で，朝鮮に対してはその道案内を求めるという〈仮道入明（かどうにゆうみん）〉を標榜していた。秀吉が出兵の意志を公表した事実が確認できるのは，関白任官直後の1585年(天正13)9月であるが，その後，対馬の宗義智（よしとし）に命じて外交交渉にあたらせ，朝鮮国王の来日を求めた。
