Jiro Kawakita
Cultural anthropologist and geographer. Graduated from the Department of Geography, Faculty of Letters, Kyoto Imperial University. After serving as an assistant professor at Osaka City University, he has served as a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, University of Tsukuba, and Chubu University. He is a professor emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology. While at Kyoto Imperial University, he joined the mountaineering club and organized an expedition with Kinji Imanishi and Tadao Umesao to investigate the Greater Khingan Mountains and other areas. In 1953, while he was an assistant professor at Osaka City University, he joined the Kyoto University Mt. Manaslu climbing team. His research topic was field surveys of mountain villages in Nepal and Tibet. Based on this experience, he invented a unique method of organizing information called the KJ method. The KJ method has been applied not only to scientific research but also to corporate information organization. He is also known for his work with the NGO Himalayan Conservation Association, which he established to protect and revitalize the environment in Himalayan mountain villages. He received the Magsaysay Award (1984) and the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (1993). His books include "Idea Method: For Creativity Development" (1966, Chuko Shinsho).

文化人類学者,地理学者。京都帝国大学文学部地理学科卒業。大阪市立大学助教授を経て,東京工業大学教授,筑波大学教授,中部大学教授を歴任。東京工業大学名誉教授。京都帝国大学時代に山岳部に入り,今西錦司,梅棹忠夫らと探検隊を組織し,大興安嶺山脈などを調査する。大阪市立大学助教授時代の1953年に京都大学マナスル山登山隊に参加。ネパール,チベットの山村のフィールド調査を研究課題とした。その経験をもとにKJ法と呼ばれる独自の情報整理法を編みだした。KJ法は科学研究のみならず企業の情報整理にも応用された。ヒマラヤ山村の環境保全と活性化のために設立したNGO〈ヒマラヤ保全協会〉の活動も知られている。マグサイサイ賞(1984年),福岡アジア文化賞(1993年)を受賞。著書に《発想法 創造性開発のために》(1966年,中公新書)などがある。
