It began in Europe in 1868 when M. Simon, the French consul in Ningbo, China, brought paradise fish from southern China back to Paris. Since then, attempts have been made to breed various freshwater tropical fish, and by the end of the 19th century they had begun to spread as pets in European and American homes. In Japan, the swordtail was imported from America in 1916 by goldfish farmer Akiyama Kichigoro, and after that, enthusiasts appeared among some aristocrats and wealthy people, and by 1930, a small number of them were sold in stores. However, it was not until 1950 that they began to spread to the general public.

　ヨーロッパへ1868年に中国の寧波（ニンポー）駐在のフランス領事のM.シモンが，南中国産のパラダイスフィッシュをパリに持ち帰ったのが始まりで，以来各種の淡水熱帯魚の飼育繁殖が試みられ，19世紀末ころには欧米の家庭で愛玩の対象として普及し始めた。　日本では，1916年キンギョ養殖家の秋山吉五郎によりアメリカからソードテールが輸入されたのをもって始まりとし，その後一部の貴顕富豪の間に愛好者が現れ，30年ころには少数ながら店頭で販売されるようにもなった。しかし，一般に普及し始めたのは50年以降である。…
