...During the Edo period, Japanese pears were cultivated in various regions, with over 150 varieties being developed. Japanese pear varieties are broadly divided into red pears, whose skin is rusty brown due to the development of corks between the fruit points, and green pears, whose skin is green without such development. During the Meiji period, representative red and green pear varieties, Chojuro and Nijisseiki, were discovered, and the area under cultivation increased with the development and spread of cultivation techniques. The area under cultivation decreased due to the effects of World War II, but currently pears are cultivated from south of Hakodate in Hokkaido to southern Kyushu. ...
