Broad‐billed roller (Bupposo)

Japanese: ブッポウソウ(仏法僧) - ブッポウソウ（英語表記）broad‐billed roller

A bird of the Coracidae family (illustration) in the Coracidae order. Total length is about 30 cm. Its overall color is deep blue-green, with large white spots on its wings. Its beak and legs are red. It is found in eastern Asia, the Malay Archipelago, and Australia, and those that breed in northern Asia and those that breed in Australia migrate to the tropics to spend the winter. It also migrates to Japan as a summer bird. It breeds in the mountainous regions of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but its population is not large. It nests in naturally formed tree holes, holes dug by woodpeckers, gaps in bridge piers, and drainage holes in dams.

ブッポウソウ目ブッポウソウ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約30cm。全体に濃青緑色で，翼には大きな白斑がある。くちばしと脚は赤い。アジア東部，マレー諸島，オーストラリアに分布し，アジア北部で繁殖するものやオーストラリアで繁殖するものは，熱帯に渡って越冬する。日本にも夏鳥として渡来する。本州･四国･九州の山地で繁殖しているが，生息数は多くない。自然にできた樹洞，キツツキ類が掘った穴，橋脚の隙間，堰堤（えんてい）の水抜き穴などに営巣する。
