... Names given according to location or use include "front gate" or "back gate," and "east gate" or "south gate" according to direction, but temple gates often have names of this type. In temples of the Nanto Rokushu sect, the important gates on each side of the four surrounding embankments are called "daimon," and with the direction added they are called "nandaimon" or "todaimon," while the gate facing the corridor is called "chumon," and the gate on the east-west corridor is called "rakumon." In the Nara period, the nandaimon and chumon were called "butsumon," and the others were called "sōmon."...
