A hospital ship is a vessel used to transport by sea only the sick and wounded, and the crew of ships in distress in times of war. It is equipped with on-board medical facilities and equipment, and is manned by medical staff including doctors. International law requires that the hull be painted white, that a red or green horizontal line and cross be marked on the hull, and that the Red Cross flag be hoisted. Hospital ships cannot be armed, and combatants cannot be carried on board. The name of the ship and identifying documents are reported to the Red Cross headquarters, which notifies the warring nations of the situation through the Red Cross. Warring nations cannot attack or capture hospital ships. It is also stipulated that ships must be provided to rescue the sick and wounded, regardless of whether they are friend or foe.
