Red telephone

Japanese: 赤電話 - あかでんわ

〘 noun 〙 A type of public telephone. A common name for commissioned public telephones. These were mainly installed in stores and other places, and their storage and handling were commissioned for the convenience of users. They were so named because the telephones were red, but they have not been used since April 1995. 〘名〙公衆電話の一つ。委託公衆電話の通称。主に店舗などに設置し、その保管や取り扱いを委託して、利用者の便をはかったもの。電話機の色が赤いところからこう呼ばれたが、平成七年（一九九五）四月以降は使用されていない。また一般に、公衆電話の通称。※セルロイドの塔（1959）〈三浦朱門〉四「駅構内に赤電話がずらりと並んでいる」
