…Born in Sweden, he entered Uppsala University in 1910 and received his doctorate in 1916 for his work on the theory of the Neumann-Poincaré problem for domains bounded by nonsmooth surfaces. His research into integral equations with singular kernels became the central focus of his life. In 1924 he became a professor at Stockholm University, and in 1927 he became director of the Mittag-Leffler Institute, where he served as editor-in-chief of the institute's journal, Acta Mathematica.
