1925‐85 A South African coloured writer. At a young age, he participated in the anti-apartheid movement, based in Cape Town, and during his repeated imprisonment he wrote the novella Wandering in the Night (1962), which depicts the hardships and downfalls of a coloured youth, the novel And the Triple-Woven Cord (1964), and the prison memoir Stone Country (1967). In 1966, he defected to Britain. Since then, he has published many short stories, including In the Mist at the End of the Season (1972), which depicts the human drama of the underground anti-apartheid movement, A Journey to the Soviet Union (1978), and When the Shrike Skewers an Insect (1979).
