Marcel Florkin

Belgian biochemist. Born in Liège, he studied medicine at the University of Liège before conducting research at universities such as Harvard, Munich, Cambridge, and California. In 1937 he became director of the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Liège. He has served as president of many academic organizations, including the International Union of Biochemistry. Along with Britain's Baldwin, he was one of the pioneers of comparative and evolutionary biochemistry, and his early representative work was Evolutionary Biochemistry (1944). He has also researched and written about the history of physiology and biochemistry, but is also known as the editor of comprehensive collections such as Comparative Biochemistry and Integrated Biochemistry.

ベルギーの生化学者。リエージュで生まれ，リエージュ大学で医学を修めた後，ハーバード，ミュンヘン，ケンブリッジ，カリフォルニアなどの大学で研究。1937年リエージュ大学生化学研究所長。国際生化学連合ほか多くの学術組織の会長などを歴任。イギリスのボールドウィンとともに比較生化学，進化生化学の開拓者の一人で，《進化生化学》(1944)は初期の代表作。生理学史や生化学史の研究や著作もあるが，《比較生化学》《総合生化学》など包括的な論集の編集者としても著名。
