...Their trade was with the Baltic, the British Isles, and the eastern Mediterranean, and even a 6th-century bronze statue of the Buddha from North India has been excavated. From about 800, Helie's functions were taken over by Birka, and then from the second half of the 10th century by Sigtuna on the northeast coast. These trading centres were linked to the interests of the Uppsala royal family, and appear to have also been religious centres.
