Year of death: April 28, 1717 (June 7, 1717) Year of birth: Manji 2 (1659) A haiku poet from the early Edo period. A native of Ise, he was a low-ranking priest at Ise Grand Shrine. His real surname was Hata, but he called himself Iwata. He met Kagami Shiko around 1694 (Genroku 7), and they became close friends after that. He is thought to have been a disciple of Matsuo Basho in his final years, but there is no record of any direct contact between the two. He was an easygoing person who was not particular about things, and was characterized by a simple style of writing such as "A wind blew all day long." He was the third generation member of the Ise haiku society, Shinpu-kan, and is considered to be the founder of the Ise school, which advocated common conversation and simple tales, but he traveled to Edo, Hokuetsu, Kyushu, and other places, and gained great influence in the haiku world after Basho's death. <References> Kagami Torao, "Iwata Ryo G7EDF" (Meiji Shoin Haiku Lecture Series, Volume 3) (Yoshinobu Tanaka) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
