Year of death: April 26, 1843 (May 25, 1843) Year of birth: 1779 A painter of the Shijo School in the late Edo period. Also known as Go Keibun. Born in Kyoto. His first name was Naoharu, his pen name was Shimo, his pen name was Kakei, and he was commonly known as Yojin. He was Goshun's half-brother, and learned painting from him. Although he was Goshun's older brother, he was as old as Goshun's father. He lived in Shijo and served at Myoho-in Temple. He was skilled in painting flowers and birds, and although he produced few masterpieces, he was said to be "better than his brother in the beauty of his ink colors." He devoted himself to sketching, and there remain over 40 sketchbooks (owned by the Domoto Museum of Art) in which he painted flowers and other things with light, light brushwork. His "Flock of Birds," which he painted on the ceiling of the Nagatoboku float at the Gion Festival in Kyoto in 1829, raised Keibun's name. He succeeded his brother and brought prosperity to the Shijo School. He died at the age of 65 and was buried next to Goshun's grave at Konpuku-ji Temple. <References> Yoshiro Sakakibara, "Sketchbook of Landscapes," Takeshi Yamakawa, editor, "Collection of Japanese Folding Screen Paintings," Vol. 8 (Motoaki Kono) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
