Drawing figures and images using a computer. Or images created. Abbreviated as CG. This technology was developed in the 1960s and has developed rapidly since the 1980s. Until then, display devices were merely computer output devices, but with the development of CG, they have come to be positioned as communication devices between people and computers. In recent years, the field of application has expanded rapidly due to the improvement in performance and reduction in prices of graphic display devices (displays) and the rapid development of image processing software. Nowadays, almost anything that humans can imagine can be drawn as an image, including flat drawings, solid figures (3D CG), and perspective drawings. Representative examples are CAD (short for computer aided design), various simulations, remote sensing, various image processing including medical CT scans, computer art, animated films, business graph creation, map creation, newspaper editing, and computer games. The equipment used in computer graphics is a display device, graphic input/output devices such as light pens, tablets, and joysticks, and optical scanners for inputting and outputting image information. In addition, the technologies necessary for processing figures and images on a computer include figure processing technology, which creates, moves, and transforms figures, and image processing technology, which converts digitized image information.

コンピューターを利用して図形や画像を描くこと。あるいは作成した画像。CGと略。1960年代に開発された技術で，1980年代から急速に発展した。それまではディスプレー装置はコンピューターの出力装置にすぎなかったが，CGの発展で人とコンピューターとのコミュニケーション装置として位置付けられるようになった。近年，グラフィック表示装置（ディスプレー）の性能向上と低価格化，画像処理用ソフトウェアの急速な発達により応用分野が急激に拡大した。現在では，平面図，立体図形（３次元CG），透視図などおよそ人間が想像できるものはすべて画像として描くことができる。代表的な例としてCAD（computer aided designの略），各種のシミュレーション，リモートセンシング，医療用のCTスキャンをはじめとする各種の画像処理，コンピューターアート，アニメーション映画，ビジネスグラフの作成，地図の作成，新聞編集，コンピューターゲームなどきわめて多彩である。　コンピューターグラフィックスで使用される機器はディスプレー装置，ライトペン，タブレット，ジョイスティックなどの図形入出力装置とイメージ情報入出力用の光学スキャナーである。またコンピューターで図形や画像を処理するために必要な技術として，図形を作成，移動あるいは変形させる図形処理技術と，デジタル化されたイメージ情報を変換するイメージ処理技術がある。
