Born November 25, 1891. Served as professor at the Army War College and Waseda University. Translated most of the major works of Russian and Soviet literature from the 19th century to the present day, and had a major influence on Japanese literature. In 1953, he received the Yomiuri Literature Prize for his translation of the Complete Works of Dostoevsky. His autobiography includes "Dumb, Root, Talent." Died December 29, 1965. Age 74.
