A state on the Atlantic coast in the northeastern United States. Abbreviated as Del. or DE. A long, narrow state that occupies the coastal plain on the west shore of Delaware Bay, the entire state is flat. Industrialization is progressing, and it is the center of the chemical industry, including DuPont de Nemours, and various industries such as food processing and textiles have developed. Poultry farming is also popular. The main agricultural products are wheat and vegetables. The standard of living of the residents is high. Settled by the Dutch in 1631. It became a British colony in 1664, and was under the supervision of the Governor of the Province of Pennsylvania until 1776. It was one of the 13 independent states in 1776. It was the first state to join the Union in 1787, and is known as the First State. The state capital is Dover. The largest city is Wilmington.
