An evergreen coniferous tall tree of the Pinaceae family (classification based on molecular phylogeny: Pinaceae). Large trees can reach a height of 40 meters and a diameter of 1 meter. The bark is reddish brown and peels off in irregular scales. The leaves are linear and slightly curved, thick and short, with a blunt tip, 6 to 10 mm long, and green-white on the underside. Monoecious. Flowers in June. The cones are oblong, cylindrical, 4 to 8 cm long, drooping, and ripen to a dark purple-brown color in September and October. They are highly adaptable to the environment and can tolerate the shade, so they often grow in special conditions such as sand dunes and volcanic ash gravel. The timber is used for construction, tools, ships, musical instruments, pulp, etc. The trees are used for bonsai and garden trees, and are planted in Hokkaido. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Mount Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture, southern Karafuto (Sakhalin), and the Southern Kuril Islands.
