An evergreen coniferous tall tree of the Pinaceae family (classification based on molecular phylogeny: Pinaceae). Large trees can reach a height of 40 meters and a diameter of 1 meter. The bark is reddish brown and peels off in irregular scales. The leaves are linear and slightly curved, thick and short, with a blunt tip, 6 to 10 mm long, and green-white on the underside. Monoecious. Flowers in June. The cones are oblong, cylindrical, 4 to 8 cm long, drooping, and ripen to a dark purple-brown color in September and October. They are highly adaptable to the environment and can tolerate the shade, so they often grow in special conditions such as sand dunes and volcanic ash gravel. The timber is used for construction, tools, ships, musical instruments, pulp, etc. The trees are used for bonsai and garden trees, and are planted in Hokkaido. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Mount Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture, southern Karafuto (Sakhalin), and the Southern Kuril Islands.

マツ科（分子系統に基づく分類：マツ科）の常緑針葉高木。大きいものは高さ40メートル、直径1メートルにも達する。樹皮は赤褐色で不規則な鱗片(りんぺん)状にはがれ落ちる。葉は線形で多少湾曲し、太くて短く、先端は鈍形で長さ6～10ミリメートル、裏面は緑白色。雌雄同株。6月に開花する。球果は長楕円(ちょうだえん)状円柱形で長さ4～8センチメートルあり下垂し、9～10月に暗紫褐色に熟す。環境に対する適応性が強く、耐陰性もあり、砂丘、火山灰礫地(れきち)など特殊な条件の所にもよく成林する。材は建築、器具、船舶、楽器、パルプなどに利用される。木は盆栽や庭木にされ、北海道では植林される。北海道および岩手県早池峰山(はやちねさん)、樺太(からふと)（サハリン）南部、南千島に分布する。
