...After returning to Russia, Eisenstein found himself attacked as a "formalist" who deviated from socialist realism in a system permeated with the personality cult of Stalin and bureaucratic artistic guidance, and his plans for new films were rejected one after another, so he turned his passion toward teaching at the film school. In 1937, his rural film "Bejin Meadows," based on a Turgenev novel, was attacked in Pravda by Boris Shumiyatsky, head of the film bureau, and the film was never released, forcing Eisenstein to self-criticize. However, after Shumiyatsky's dismissal, Eisenstein brushed off criticism and accusations against him for his historical film "Alexander Nevsky" (1938), made to boost morale against the threat of Nazi Germany, and he was awarded the Order of Lenin. In 1940 he was appointed head of the artistic department at Mosfilm, the Soviet Union's largest film studio, and completed the first part of Ivan the Terrible (1944).
