Five Nunneries - Amadera Gosan

〘Noun〙 During the Muromachi period, this was a name given to five nunneries in Kyoto, modelled on the Five Mountains of Zen Buddhism. The five were Keiai-ji, Tsugen-ji, Danrin-ji, Gonen-ji and Erin-ji. Similarly, five temples were selected in Kamakura: Taihei-ji, Tokei-ji, Kokuon-ji, Goho-ji and Zenmyo-ji. Five Nunneries. 〘名〙 室町時代に、禅宗の五山にならって京都の尼寺五か所を選んで称したもの。景愛寺・通玄寺・檀林寺・護念寺・恵林寺の五つ。鎌倉でも同様に、太平寺・東慶寺・国恩寺・護宝（法）寺・禅明寺の五寺が選ばれた。尼五山。〔易林本節用集（1597）〕
