Aoyagi Bunzo
1761-1839 A merchant in the late Edo period.
Born in the 11th year of the Horeki era. He studied Confucianism under Inoue Kinga in Edo. He collected 20,000 volumes of books with funds earned through trade and donated them to the Sendai Domain. The domain named it the Aoyagi Library and made it open to the public. After the Boshin War, many of the books were scattered. He passed away on March 14th, 10th year of the Tenpo era. He was 79 years old. He was from Iwai County, Mutsu (Iwate Prefecture). His given name was Shigeaki. His pen names were Azuma and Kinsui-ro Shujin.

宝暦11年生まれ。江戸で井上金峨(きんが)に儒学をまなぶ。貿易でえた資金で書籍2万巻をあつめ,仙台藩に寄贈した。藩は青柳文庫と名づけ,一般に公開。戊辰(ぼしん)戦争後,書籍のおおくは散逸した。天保(てんぽう)10年3月14日死去。79歳。陸奥(むつ)磐井(いわい)郡(岩手県)出身。名は茂明。号は東里,近水楼主人。
