Documenta - dokumenta (English spelling) documenta

Documenta - dokumenta (English spelling) documenta

An international art exhibition held in Kassel, Hesse, Germany. Since the first exhibition in 1955, it has been held every 4-5 years, and the 10th exhibition was held in 1997. The original purpose was to revive Germany's art, which had been stifled by the Nazi cultural policies and war and had fallen behind international standards. The first exhibition exhibited modern art that had been branded as degenerate by the Nazis before World War II. Since the second exhibition in 1960, American works have been added, and the scale has gradually expanded since then. Today, along with the Venice Biennale, it is the most important international exhibition that introduces the latest trends in contemporary art around the world. However, while the Venice Biennale has a kind of Olympic character in that artists are selected by country and prizes are awarded by a jury, documenta usually has a single director who selects all participating artists under a certain theme. For this reason, the selection of artists tends to be biased towards Western artists, but Japanese artists who have participated so far include Shusaku Arakawa, On Kawara, Jiro Takamatsu, Noriyuki Haraguchi, Tadashi Kawamata, and Mika Yoshizawa. The 10th exhibition was directed by the French artist Catherine David (1954-), the first woman to do so.
