A perennial plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). Also known as Rock Polygonum, White Polygonum. The rhizome penetrates deep underground, the stem is thick, branched, 20-80 cm tall, green or pale reddish purple, and hairless. The leaves are stalked, alternate, ovate, pointed at the tip, 8-17 cm long, thick, and have membranous leaf sheaths. Dioecious. Flowering in July-August, it produces large panicles at the ends of the branches, with greenish yellow perianths 2.5 mm long and about 10 stamens. The achene is obovate, 6-8 mm long, with dark brown, shiny wings that are longer than the perianth. It grows on gravelly ground in high mountains in Honshu north of the Chubu region and Hokkaido, and is also distributed in Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. The name comes from Mount Ontake in Nagano Prefecture. The parent species, Polygonum umbellata, grows slightly further north than Polygonum umbellata, and the undersides of the leaves are covered with white hairs.
