This idea has been passed down to Western medicine, and the 16th century book De Arte Gymnastica by G. Mercuriale describes the principles of medical gymnastics as follows: (1) exercise should maintain health, (2) exercise should not disturb the balance of blood and body fluids, (3) exercise should be appropriate for each part of the body, (4) healthy people should exercise regularly, (5) sick people should avoid exercise that may worsen their condition, (6) people in the convalescent stage should be prescribed exercises according to their individual conditions, and (7) people who live a sedentary lifestyle need exercise first and foremost.
