...The Japanese name "kasuri" is said to have been derived from the fact that the outline of the woven pattern looks blurred due to the irregularities of the ikat threads. The names "hihaku" in China and "chiné" in French (meaning spotted) used in Europe are also for the same reason. However, today the Malay word "ikat," meaning "to tie" or "to bind," is commonly used as a universal dyeing and weaving term.
