Mirror Making Department

Japanese: 鏡作部 - かがみつくりべ
Mirror Making Department

The name of a group of craftsmen who engaged in the manufacture of mirrors in ancient times. Their leader (Tomo no Miyatsuko) was called Kagami-tsukuri-no-miyatsuko (later Muraji), and is said to be a descendant of Amanonukato no Mikoto's son Ishikoridome no Mikoto. Ishikoridome is said to have produced the sacred mirror, a symbol of the imperial throne, and to have accompanied the descent of the heavenly grandson. Kagami-tsukuri-ni-imasu Amaterasu-mitama Shrine in Shikinoshimo District, Yamato Province (Tawaramoto Town, Shiki District, Nara Prefecture) enshrines the guardian deity of Kagami-tsukuri-no-miyatsuko. After the Taika period (645-650), the skills of mirror-making gradually became more widespread, and under the Ritsuryo system, the job came to be carried out by miscellaneous craftsmen.
