A class organized around a series of steps: predictions about experimental problems, discussions, and verification through experiments. In 1963, Itakura Seinobu conceived the idea based on the idea that "scientific knowledge is a social knowledge that can only be established through experiments that question the subject with a sense of purpose." A "lesson book" is used that serves as a lesson plan, textbook, and notebook. It was primarily used in natural science education in elementary schools, but now "lesson books" are being created as "guidebooks" for junior high and high school classes and in the field of social science education. There is also a view to include image verification lessons in hypothesis-experiment lessons.

実験問題についての予想，討論，実験での検証という一連の手続きにそって組織される授業。 1963年，板倉聖宣が「科学的認識は対象に目的意識をもって問いかける実験によってのみ成立する社会的な認識である」という考えに基づいて構想した。授業案，教科書，ノートを兼ねた「授業書」と呼ばれるものが用いられる。小学校の自然科学系教育での実践が中心だったが，現在「授業書」は「指導書」として，中学校，高等学校の授業や社会科学系教育の領域にもその作成が及んでいる。なお，イメージ検証授業を仮説実験授業に含める考えもある。
