...The initial capacity was 400, and the first 85 patients transferred from Tama Zenshoen in the following year of 1956 were accommodated there. In 1951, a patient who could no longer endure the poor treatment and attempted to escape was imprisoned, which led to the Nagashima Incident, in which patients demanded improved treatment and the establishment of patient self-governance. The history of Aiseien is said to epitomize the history of leprosy measures in Japan. Today, treatment for leprosy has made remarkable progress, and it is said that more than 95% of the approximately 5,400 patients living in 13 national sanatoriums across the country have been cured, but reintegration into society is not easy, and 668 patients are still housed at Aiseien (as of January 1997). ...

…当初の収容定員は400人で翌31年多磨全生園から転園した85人を収容したのがはじめである。36年,劣悪な待遇に耐えきれず逃亡をはかった患者を監禁したことに端を発して,患者が待遇改善や患者自治の確立などを要求した長島事件が起きているが,愛生園のあゆみは日本の癩病対策の歴史を凝集したものともいわれる。ハンセン病の治療は今日では著しく進歩し,全国13ヵ所の国立療養所に生活している約5400人の患者の9割5分以上は治癒しているといわれるが,社会復帰は容易でなく,愛生園にもなお668人が収容されている(1997年1月現在)。…
