1850‐1922 A German socialist of aristocratic descent. As chief editor of the Social Democrat since 1879, he advocated radical arguments. In his El Dorado Speech (1891) after the repeal of the Anti-Socialist Laws, he defended "gradual organic development." As the leader of the Bavarian Social Democratic Party, he stressed the importance of winning over peasants, but was defeated in the debate over the party's agricultural platform in 1894-95. However, he continued to be a central figure in the revisionist reform faction in South Germany, promoting budgetary support in the state parliament and electoral cooperation with other parties.
